Our skin is our largest organ. It breathes, absorbs, and responds to everything we place on it. From a yogic perspective, caring for the skin is just as important as nourishing the body through food. A beautiful Ayurvedic principle reminds us: if we wouldn’t eat it, we probably shouldn’t be putting it on our skin.

The good news? Many of the most nourishing skincare ingredients are already sitting in your kitchen. Simple pantry staples can become powerful rituals for glowing, balanced skin — naturally.

In Ayurveda, each dosha expresses differently through the skin. Understanding your skin’s constitution can help you choose ingredients that bring balance and radiance.

How to Apply Your Ayurvedic Face Mask

Method

  1. Mix ingredients into a smooth paste consistency.

  2. Cleanse your skin first.

  3. Use a warm washcloth to gently steam and open the pores.

  4. Apply the mask at room temperature or slightly warm, never cold.

  5. Leave on for around 20 minutes, before the mask becomes overly dry or crusty.

  6. Rinse away with warm water using gentle circular motions.

If your mask contains turmeric or other staining ingredients, then rinsing in the shower can make removal easier.

Natural Beauty as Ritual

Ayurvedic skincare is a practice of self-care, nourishment, and connection. When we use whole, living ingredients on our skin, we create rituals that honour both beauty and wellbeing.

Your kitchen can become an apothecary. Your skincare can become ceremony. And your skin can glow from a place of balance, simplicity, and care.

Do it with friends! At a recent weekend retreat we explored Ayurveda and made our own face masks! One person shared that she invites friends over for a self care social get together! It was so fun to do this together :)
